They’re simply divided based on the interviewer’s general impression.
That’s why it’s not uncommon to hear comments like, “Isn’t she actually platinum rather than gold?” among the gold women.

If you’re judging objectively rather than based on personal preferences, and looking at the overall average, I’d say Platinum is generally a higher level—but the difference is about that much.
Men can view all the classes once they join, so it makes sense to find someone you’d like to make an offer to first, then upgrade your membership.
Some women worry about which class they’re in, but I don’t think it really means anything. If you want to know your level, why not enter a beauty pageant?
