I played an insane amount of mahjong in college, but I don’t play at all anymore.
At this point, I’ve even half-forgotten how to calculate the scores lol.

I didn’t expect mahjong to come up.
Joe’s first assignment after starting work was in Kanda. Back then, Kanda had more than 200 mahjong parlors. As a rookie, one of my jobs was to secure taxis after we finished playing. It was the height of the bubble era, and getting a taxi was genuinely difficult—especially for short trips, since drivers would flat-out refuse to take you.
These days, there are only around 30 mahjong parlors left in Kanda, and if a taxi refused a passenger now, it would be a major issue.
I’d love to play while chatting about stories like that.

I feel like there are fewer people who enjoy mahjong these days.
If a papa likes mahjong, he’ll probably bring it up at some point by asking something like, “Can you play mahjong?” So if you tell him you can, you might get invited sometime.
That said, I don’t hear about that happening very often. If anything, golf seems to come up more frequently.

These days, I don’t hear about many men playing mahjong either.
Rather than not mentioning it because there’s no point in telling a PJ, I think a lot of them genuinely just don’t play it in their everyday lives.
