He’s told me to name my desired allowance because he wants me to see only him. I want to ask for more than I actually hope for because I’d hate for him to think, “Lucky me, that’s cheaper than I expected.” What do you think about asking for 2 million yen a month?

It feels like this might be a bait question, but to answer seriously… A man who can pay ¥2 million a month is earning at least ¥4 million a month after taxes. An after-tax monthly income of ¥4 million works out to an annual income of around ¥100 million. According to data published by Universe Club, men at that level make up just 1.7%. Obviously, that’s extremely rare. First, think carefully about whether your partner is really the kind of man who can comfortably offer ¥2 million a month. If you’re suggesting that as a way to turn him down, that’s fine—but I should point out that it’s very likely to bring the relationship itself to an end.

It sounds like your partner likes you, so I think you should simply tell them how you feel. If you’re completely off the mark, it may mean the relationship ends—but from the way you wrote this, I get the sense that you’d be okay with that.

Both Are Equally Ridiculous The person asking and the person answering—the whole relationship is ridiculous. If they truly loved each other, there’d be no need to ask.

“I want you to see only me, so I’ll offer whatever allowance you want. Tell me your desired amount.” → “I’m really, really happy to hear that, and I’d like to see only you too, but… I’m so happy and yet I feel bad asking, so I honestly can’t even think of an amount (>_<) But thank you so, so much… This is the first time anything like this has happened, and I’m getting nervous (>_<)” “Then how much is your rent? How much do you spend on living expenses each month?” → “My rent is ○○ yen. As for living expenses… I don’t spend that much.” → “I see. Then I guess ○○ should be enough for now.” Something along those lines might work well. At least in my case, I’ve never stated an amount I wanted. I feel kind of bad asking for one, you know…

If I were a man, I think I’d wonder whether I’d want to date someone like me. If I were asking a man for an allowance, I’d probably ask for roughly what he could earn by dating multiple women, plus a little extra. Marika

Since it’s what you want, you can name whatever amount you feel is appropriate. But first, I think it’s better to feel out what the other person can afford before stating your terms. For example, you could say something like: “My desired monthly allowance is quite high, so I don’t think you could manage it on your own. I’d prefer to see just one person too, but it’s honestly more than one person could reasonably pay…” Then let them tell you what they’re able to offer and go from there. Even if you’re hoping for ¥2 million, they may only be thinking of around ¥200,000.

Speaking only for myself, I’d ask for the absolute minimum amount I actually need.
