I feel like in some relationships, a purchased gift is better than something handmade, while in others, a handmade gift is better than something bought. How can I tell which is more appropriate?

I believe the most important thing about a gift is the thought behind it. Taking the time to think about what they’d like is part of that thoughtfulness. It’s not really something you should ask other people about.

Homemade food is dangerous because you never know what’s in it.
Like I said the other day, a gentleman who enjoys making sweets brought me some homemade pudding. What would you do? Could you eat it? There might be something in it.

I think the important thing about a gift is the thought behind it.
So I don’t think it matters much whether it’s store-bought or handmade.
Handmade gifts may feel more heartfelt to you, but I don’t think that makes much difference to the person receiving them.
That said, everyone is different. If a man feels that handmade gifts show more thought, then it may have an effect—but I don’t think there are many men like that.
