I’m a female member. I ended up accepting what was clearly far too much for a taxi fare, on top of my allowance, and I deeply regret it. I’d like to return it next time. I know everyone feels differently, but could you advise me on how to offer it in a way that won’t make him feel uncomfortable and that he’ll find easy to accept? We’ve been seeing each other for a year, and I’m very fond of him.

I’m Fuu, a column writer. I think your feelings are sweet and endearing, but if you return the money, the other person may feel a little awkward, so accept it gratefully! Show your appreciation as much as you can, and give them plenty of enthusiastic reactions. Personally, what would make Fuu happy is having someone whisper in my ear in bed: “Thank you so much for everything. Tonight, you can do whatever you want.” ↑ As I mentioned in a previous answer, I don’t need gifts. I’d love to hear that on an anniversary or my birthday too(笑)

I’m a male member, Paper Airplane. From a man’s perspective, giving someone > clearly far more than the taxi fare is a perfectly natural thing to do. So I don’t think a man who does that would take the money back, meaning you can just accept it. Or was it more than 50,000–60,000 yen? In that case, I think it’s fine to say, “I’ll accept it as spending money (or an allowance). Thank you.”

I’m Kazu, a male member. She might feel uncomfortable if you pay her back directly in cash, so I think it would be better to give her a small gift or something similar.
