I made an offer to a woman on Standard who didn’t seem to be getting many offers, but she turned it down, saying she had class even though it was a public holiday. I’m wondering if she just made up an excuse to reject me because I’m in my 60s, and I’m unsure whether to make another offer.

Back in the day, classes weren’t held on public holidays. These days, though, many universities hold classes even on holidays because they need to meet required teaching-day quotas and face all sorts of scrutiny if they don’t.
When you were in college, society was simply a lot more relaxed.

Normally, no. But with the impact of COVID, it seems some places may have them.
Perhaps private universities or vocational schools? It’s definitely limited to certain schools.
Oh, my nephew attends a national university, and they did have an orientation before his practical training. Still, I don’t think civil servants—such as faculty at national universities—would work on public holidays.
That said, it’s not impossible that someone could be pretending to be a student...
