None of the company rules have changed. The policy is still not to get involved in whether someone is married or not—meaning they’re not supposed to ask.
However, since the men ask about it, the staff apparently end up asking as well, and before anyone knew it, an unofficial “rule” had developed on the ground.
In other words, a lot of staff members have been violating the company rules.
I noticed this about two weeks ago and asked the manager at the branch about it. Their response was basically, “The men ask about it, so…” followed by some mumbling.
That led to the question: “Was this even a rule in the first place?” Honestly, it was pretty shocking.
It was supposed to be a rule, but apparently it was just one of those things that happens at Universe.
I don’t know what will happen going forward. Naturally, the branch manager has both the authority and the responsibility to change the rules, so that’s what I mean by not knowing.
Even if you’re asked, I think it’s perfectly fine to refuse to answer. You shouldn’t lie, but choosing not to answer is obviously your right.
If you’re registering for the first time, though, and a staff member says, “We need you to answer this,” you may feel like you have no choice.
In that case, perhaps you could say, “Maezawa wrote in the Q&A box that lying isn’t okay, but refusing to answer is.”
Although they might still say, “That Q&A box is separate from this.”
