If you date someone who’s married and their husband sues you for damages, you’ll almost certainly have to pay, and the amount can be substantial—often around ¥2–4 million. Also, while it may seem commendable that a woman openly says she’s married, in practice, the claim for damages is usually made against the man involved rather than the wife. After all, suing the wife won’t increase the household’s finances. So I’m not really sure why she would go out of her way to disclose it and then try to pursue a relationship. Even if she were married, if she told you she was single and you had no reason to doubt her, you’d at least have some grounds to fight back if her husband demanded damages—you could say she told you she was single and that you have proof. In that sense, I almost feel more reassured when someone says they’re single. That said, if you want to avoid getting involved in any dispute at all—even if you might not ultimately have to pay damages—it’s probably best not to date married women. In that case, I think it would be enough to add a line when making the offer: “Please decline if you are married.”
