A question suddenly came to mind, so I apologize if this has already been answered.
For example, if I join the Standard Class and later want to switch to the Gold Class, would I pay the difference in the enrollment fee and annual membership fee?
I understand the difference in the annual membership fee, but I had understood “joining” to mean joining Universe, so I was wondering what benefit there would be to paying the difference in the enrollment fee.

No. You only pay the difference in the membership fee.
The difference in the annual fee is not relevant.
Since you’re only paying the difference in the membership fee, you won’t lose money compared with joining the higher class from the start.
That’s because your membership is valid for one year from the date you upgrade.

The benefit of upgrading from Standard to Gold is that, in addition to Standard women, you can also make offers to Gold women—yes, really!
If members could upgrade without paying the difference in the joining fee, some people would join as Standard simply to save money on the initial fee, wouldn’t they?
Since this was mentioned in the question, perhaps this point wasn’t clear, so I’d like to add that the joining fee includes the membership fee for the first year.

Also, it seems there’s the benefit of it being valid for one year from that point.
