What rent would seem cute to a man who lives in a place that costs ¥2 million a month? He recently offered to rent a place for me, and I was thinking of asking for somewhere twice as expensive as where I live now, but I’m worried that might be too extravagant… Would it seem cuter if I chose a place with about the same rent as my current home?

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here as well. Thank you for your question. A man who pays your rent… That sounds great. During the bubble era, there were plenty of stories about men buying their partners entire apartments—not just paying their rent. But things are different now, so I think having someone cover your rent alone is already quite remarkable. That said, one concern is that “I’ll pay your rent” may sometimes mean the man wants to use that apartment himself. So I think it would be safer to leave your current place as it is and move into the new one with only the bare essentials. You may feel that defeats the purpose, but you should consider the possibility of him entering your main home, or saying, “Then I’m not paying your rent anymore,” after an argument and leaving you in a difficult situation. With that in mind, rather than having him pay your rent directly, it may be more beneficial to receive the equivalent amount as an allowance. Even if you resolve those concerns and decide to let him pay your rent, it would be safest to choose a place you could afford on your own after the relationship ends—in other words, somewhere around the same rent as your current home.

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member who brings in about ¥8 million a month in rental income. Still, I’d like to keep seeing someone with a fairly modest rent… If I hear that her rent is twice as much, I end up seeing her less often… It would be cuter if women asked for about the same amount as their rent. Actually, I’d rather just go with her to look around at places she wants to find and live in herself.

I’m Kazu, a male member. I think the best approach is to ask him, “What kind of rent would you be willing to cover for me?” Since you’ll have to move out when the relationship ends, I recommend having him rent a place that’s within your means.
