Lately, I feel like more people have been asking me to reduce my allowance when we meet for the second time.

I’m Column Writer’s Adventure Merchant. Basically, I’ve never asked to reduce the allowance. However, I have suggested an adjustment when switching from pay-per-meeting to a monthly arrangement. For example, if the pay-per-meeting terms were 1 for dinner and 5 for what comes after, I might suggest meeting three times a month for 12. We could agree that we’d go further on two of those occasions, while leaving the third up to the circumstances at the time, since there may be days when health or other factors make it difficult. If we ended up going further all three times, it would effectively mean a lower rate, but I have made arrangements along those lines.
