Maezawa here. I haven’t collected any statistics, so I can’t say which is more common. It’s difficult to define what counts as a “high amount,” since everyone has different standards. For men who used to meet women through dating apps or similar services, especially those with lower incomes, even ¥50,000 might feel like an excessive demand. At Universe, however, many men earn more than the average income, so I think relatively few would consider around ¥50,000 to be a high amount. Also, it’s not just about the amount itself. What a man considers “high” can vary depending on what the woman herself is like. For example, some people spend over ¥1 million on CDs just to shake hands with a celebrity. Is paying ¥1 million just for a handshake an excessive demand? They probably believe it’s worth that much, so they likely don’t feel they’re being overcharged. When it’s already difficult to establish a standard based solely on the amount, factoring in how each man feels about it makes it even harder to determine what is or isn’t a high amount. So I don’t think it’s possible to know whether there are many or few people like that.
