I’m Saito, a column writer♪ I used to struggle with this issue too. Once, a woman canceled at the last minute even though I had told her the restaurant in advance. The club staff knew how expensive the place was and apologized profusely. Since then, I’ve started choosing the restaurant after she arrives. A one-Michelin-star restaurant is usually easy enough to book, especially with the economy being so sluggish. Of course, I would never make multiple reservations and then cancel at the last minute—that would be rude. But celebrities and TV announcers I have ongoing arrangements with cancel at the last minute all the time. Still, I support them so they can properly seize those opportunities. In the end, if I eat alone and order a bottle of DRC as an apology, there’s no problem. If I drink with the restaurant staff and create a good atmosphere, they actually appreciate it.
