The restaurants we go to on dates don’t necessarily have to be upscale, but I always struggle with what to wear.

The club told me to dress appropriately since I’d be going to nice places, but sometimes we’ve ended up at reasonably priced izakayas or yakiniku restaurants. I’m not particularly into upscale places myself, so I don’t mind going to a yakiniku restaurant or an izakaya. However, if I dress as though I’m going to a French restaurant, I feel like I stand out and look out of place… Especially at a first meeting, I don’t know what the other person is like, so I have a hard time deciding what to wear. It’s not that I don’t want to make an effort just because the restaurant is inexpensive—I just don’t want to stand out in the restaurant or give the other person the impression that I came expecting to go somewhere upscale. When I actually meet them, it seems the men haven’t necessarily decided on a restaurant in advance. I feel awkward asking the club what kind of place we’ll be going to beforehand, but is there any good solution…? What do women usually wear when they go to their first meeting?
