As I wrote, “We ask about your English ability,” we would simply ask how proficient you were.
However, when a foreigner made an offer and it led to a date, we sometimes found out that the woman’s conversational ability wasn’t actually that strong. So, for women who say they speak English and are comfortable being matched with foreigners, we may connect them by video call with someone from the international division and have them converse in English to assess their ability.
That said, since the international division was based in Tokyo, this was generally limited to women who interviewed in Tokyo.
As for requiring a TOEIC score above a certain level, there were naturally plenty of women with high scores, but in many cases, this was more about appealing to Japanese men.
