“Pickups” is, as the name suggests, a section where staff feature women they want to highlight. It includes women whose personalities were great but who haven’t received many offers, as well as women they recommend and think you should take a look at—in short, women with some kind of appealing quality. That said, it doesn’t mean they’ll be a good match for every man. Be sure to check what their recommended qualities are and whether those are qualities you personally value. You can ask questions in the Q&A box, but normally, this is the kind of thing you should ask the staff about.

I think the staff make the picks based on their own judgment. It probably doesn’t vary from member to member.
