This is a story from before COVID, when I went to a Japanese soba restaurant near Saint-Germain-des-Prés Church in Paris. I generally think going to a Japanese restaurant abroad is in poor taste, but it was New Year’s Eve.
The French don’t slurp their soba. Since we were the only ones doing it, the sound echoed throughout the restaurant.
Yesterday, I went to Kanda Matsuya for the first time in ages. Here, I can slurp my soba without a worry. The sound of slurping came from all around the restaurant, putting Joe at ease.
After the soba, I went to see Drive My Car. Against our better judgment, we ended up having sex after the movie. I think it would be just as difficult for a couple with complicated circumstances to watch this film and not have sex as it would be to eat soba at Matsuya without slurping.
That said, is it really bad to slurp pasta too? If only Matsuya added pasta to the menu, I could give it a try.

Laughing together when you can’t twirl your pasta properly, or just enjoying a brighter, more cheerful time together—that would be nice〜(*^^*)
Marika, I’d never heard of that before! If you ate ramen without slurping, it seems like it would take forever（笑）

Most Japanese people probably slurp their noodles when eating ramen or cold noodles, but apparently Chinese and Korean people don’t.
Not that it really matters.

I know that in some cultures, slurping pasta is considered bad manners.

I don’t usually eat pasta.
Basic manners that don’t make the other person uncomfortable are important, but I think being overly particular is a bit much.
Personally, I don’t see why slurping pasta is such a big deal.
I’d find it more unpleasant if someone used a toothpick right in front of me.
