I have a question. Once I make an offer and we arrange to meet, I assume we’d start by going out for a meal and getting to know each other. If it’s dinner, roughly how much should I budget, and what kind of restaurant would be appropriate to take her to?

A restaurant with a nice atmosphere is more important than staying within a strict budget. In my experience, places with a good atmosphere usually cost around ¥10,000–¥20,000 for two people. If you go below that price range, the invitation afterward may not go well, or the relationship going forward may not develop smoothly. So I think around ¥10,000–¥20,000 is about right. However, if you don’t know any nice restaurants like that, choosing a slightly more expensive one can make them feel like, “They took me somewhere really nice.” So if you’re not sure, that can be a good option. In that case, I’d suggest a budget of around ¥50,000. If you want to take them somewhere even more expensive, I think it’s better to wait until you’ve gotten to know each other better.

It’s probably best to avoid chain restaurants. Personally, I also avoid places where the cost of the venue seems to be added on top. I choose restaurants based on the quality of the food rather than the price, and usually end up booking places that cost around ¥5,000–¥10,000 per person for dinner.

Excluding alcohol, I choose private-room restaurants with a budget of at least ¥5,000 per person. I base the type of cuisine on the woman’s favorite foods and any ingredients she dislikes listed in her profile. After making the reservation, I ask the staff to let her know that we should meet at the restaurant, and I confirm whether she’s comfortable with that choice. Some women prefer times outside normal mealtimes, such as 3 p.m. In those cases, I choose a hotel lounge or Starbucks instead. I handle these the same way by arranging to meet at the venue and confirming her preference.

Even though you made the offer, you don’t know what kind of woman will show up, so a nice dinner at an upscale hotel for around ¥5,000–¥10,000 is your safest bet. Family restaurants like Saizeriya are a no-go. Starbucks is out too, of course.

Since this is someone you’re hoping to continue seeing, I think the best choice is a place where you feel, “This is the most suitable setting for both of us, and the best hospitality I can offer.” Why ask other people about the location or budget? You’re not a child, so think it through and plan it yourself. Good luck!
