I’m about to receive ¥100,000. Since I’m exempt from resident tax, I’m obviously poor. What should I spend it on?

You can use it for whatever you like, so please use it right away. Otherwise, it’ll be gone soon. It would be a shame to let it go to waste.

You don’t have any money, and you’re just getting by day to day, right? You’ll need it if something happens, so you shouldn’t spend it.

Personally, I think the worst thing you could do is put it into savings. If it were me, I’d spend ¥100,000 on books. I’d take my time choosing them, leaving just enough for a draft beer with lunch. Then I’d slowly open the books while enjoying my beer. It may not have the immediate effect of cosmetics, but the knowledge and inspiration you gain from books could come back to you many times over.

If it’s 100,000 yen, I’ll put it away in the dresser in case something comes up.

If you can afford to think about how to spend it, I think it’s better to set it aside for something you may need later.

I couldn’t help thinking that planning how to spend money as soon as it comes in feels a bit “poor person”-like. Sorry. There’s also the option of saving it—or investing it to grow.
