He suggested that we get matching Cartier or Bulgari necklaces, but I want a Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra instead. Any advice on how to say that without hurting his feelings?

Well, to put it bluntly, just tell them exactly what you’re looking for. Also, women sometimes ask how to do this “without hurting him,” but they really mean “without getting hurt themselves.” Just keep that in mind.

Personally, the fact that a man would choose a Cartier or Bulgari necklace is already a total turnoff taste-wise… but putting that aside. Your tastes are pretty far apart. No matter which way you compromise, one of you is bound to be unhappy. You might want to give up on matching items altogether. At most, the only matching item I could tolerate would be watches—same brand, but different models. Marika

I’m Rin, a female member of SALON. Since the matching aspect is important, you could say, “I’d love for us to get matching Alhambra pieces.” That way, you won’t hurt his feelings—but honestly, I don’t think many men would wear an Alhambra necklace. If you’re close, you could say that you’d like an Alhambra necklace, but since matching necklaces might be difficult, he could get matching cufflinks instead. That’s where you get to show your creativity! Though, getting matching Cartier or Bulgari necklaces would be the best option—then no one loses out! I’d love to complete my Alhambra collection someday with the earrings, necklace, ring, and bracelet, so I completely understand how you feel. Good luck!

I’m Taro, a male member. Why not suggest that you both wear matching Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra pieces? The key is that they’re a pair—she doesn’t seem particularly attached to the brand.
