I agree that asking about someone else’s salary is tacky, and I’m sure most people feel the same way—but don’t you sometimes meet men who ask anyway? Or they ask questions that feel like they’re trying to figure it out indirectly. Why do they do that? It really lowers my impression of them. Doctors seem especially likely to do it. Business owners who are financially comfortable don’t seem to ask as often.

I have several papa supporters who are doctors and dentists, but I’ve never been asked about it. If their salary is low, it would be nice if they could make up for it with a generous allowance. Marika

I’m Tetsu, a male member. I agree. What good does it do to ask about someone else’s income? If I were a woman, I’d be tempted to say, “I don’t make much, so please be generous with the allowance,” or something like that (lol).

I’m Rin, a female member of SALON. I read Kazu’s answer and found it very convincing. I’m in a specialized profession myself and don’t really know much about other worlds, so I’m very curious about them. That said, I still can’t bring myself to ask someone I’m meeting for the first time. Once we get to know each other, though, I might casually ask about it.

I’m Dai, a male member. I often say this here, but sometimes people ask bizarre questions simply because they have nothing else to talk about. Still, it was a pretty rude thing to say…

I’m Kazu, a male member. The reason I ask is probably that I don’t consider asking about it rude or in poor taste. People whose jobs earn them the title of “sensei” often work exclusively in that industry, so I feel they tend to develop a rather unique perspective.
