I’m jealous of you all! If you’re close with him, I think it’s fine to ask about his budget. I’d probably say, “This is what I’d really like…” and make a request for something I want. Then I’d add playfully, “Just let me know if it’s over your budget!” haha.
How about going shopping together? I’d definitely be happier receiving something I genuinely want.

How about giving them around three options at different price points?
It depends on your relationship, but if I felt awkward asking directly, that’s what I would do.
Something like a “liste de mariage,” perhaps?
