I appreciate the thought, but when it comes to food, smaller portions are better.
I once had a girl give me a tin of sweets big enough to hand out at work. To make matters worse, they weren’t individually wrapped, so once I opened it, I couldn’t keep them for long. It was honestly a real hassle.
With alcohol, on the other hand, a decent quantity is best. I don’t understand the point of small bottles of sake or shochu. I think true adult class is agonizing over how many full-size 1.8-liter bottles to give someone.

If it’s sweets, they’re consumable, so they shouldn’t be a hassle. Just keep it to a small amount—enough for the two of you to finish together!

I always brought a small gift to the first meeting for each initial offer. Of course, some people dislike that kind of thing, seeing it as overly calculated, so it’s not necessarily something you should do 100% of the time.
That said, I figured it probably wouldn’t hurt to bring one, at least. In the end, it worked out well for me—I met lots of good papas.
