My papa (a male supporter) keeps holding my hand in public, and it’s embarrassing, so I want him to stop. But since I’m genuinely in love with him, I’m worried that asking him to stop might hurt his feelings. What should I do? 😭

I’m Aya, a female member. I know—it’s uncomfortable when a papa (a male supporter) wants to hold hands, right? I can understand. He sounds like the type who doesn’t have much dating experience. How about laughing and giving him a light smack on the shoulder while saying, “Ugh, no way! That’s too embarrassing!”? Or, when you pass some random young person, you could say, “Oh no, that’s a friend from college!” and let go of his hand.

I’m Fuu, a column writer. Thank you for being considerate and trying not to make me uncomfortable. As the other respondents mentioned, you should tell him you’d rather he not do that, since being seen by others could make it difficult for you to keep meeting. If you’re worried about damaging the relationship or being dropped, try wording it tactfully, such as: “I’ll make it up to you by being extra affectionate in private.” And even if he does cut things off, as long as you’re still getting offers, there are more papas who won’t hold hands in public because they don’t want their identity exposed. So you can feel reassured about finding someone else next time.

Seriously falling in love…? With a papa (a male supporter)? What does “seriously falling in love” mean in papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? I don’t really understand. Akari

Maezawa from the CEO’s Office here, too. If you just say you’re embarrassed, he may ask, “What’s there to be embarrassed about?” So I think it might be better to phrase it like: “If someone I know sees us, I won’t be able to meet you anymore, so would it be okay if we didn’t hold hands when we’re walking around outside?” He may not agree right away, but if you emphasize that you won’t be able to see each other anymore if you’re found out, he may feel that it’s better than not being able to meet at all.

I’m Dai, a male member. If you tell someone, “I’m worried this could reveal my identity, so please stop,” and they refuse to stop, I don’t think they’re genuinely in love with you. If they really were, they’d care about your feelings and well-being…

I’m Nana Ayase ♡ I’m embarrassed to hold hands in public… Please seriously explain to your papa what could happen if he holds your hand in public. For example, what if someone from his company happens to see him holding hands with a young girl? Also, you may be the only one who thinks this is true love. Don’t be fooled by him saying, “You’re the only one.” There are probably several others. If you feel it’s too much trouble to say all this, just say goodbye.
