I’m generally not one to take photos, but when the person I’m dining with wants to, they usually ask the restaurant staff first.
At dinners or meals, if I listen to the explanation of the dishes, ask questions, and start eating right away, I’m often asked, “Aren’t you going to take a photo?”
That’s how common it has become—perhaps to the point where it feels like the norm.
That’s precisely why I think it’s considerate to show some thoughtfulness toward the people who prepared and served the food.

I think asking your companion during the meal will make you come across as polite and considerate. So it would probably be best to ask the man before taking a photo.
That said, when you’re at a restaurant he’s taken you to, he may ask:
“Aren’t you taking any photos today?”
In that case, you might have to say something like, “Oh, I forgot,” take one anyway, and make him happy.

I sometimes take photos, but only after giving my papa (a male supporter) a heads-up. Though I’ve been doing that less lately. I also don’t want to be asked things like, “Are you going to post that on Instagram?” I only use my personal account, but I don’t want people thinking I’m one of those papa-katsu girls on Instagram… They might think I’ve lost that innocent, fresh vibe, but honestly, I don’t really care lol.
