I’ve been seeing a woman about once a month for around six months. She’s a C-type, and we’ve continued with the usual dinner-then-hotel arrangement. When I saw her the other day after a month apart, she seemed very subdued, barely smiled, and hardly spoke. She was originally a quiet girl, but somehow her expression seemed unusually gloomy. We had dinner and went to a hotel as usual that day, and after we parted, she sent me a thank-you email like she always does. However, the email also had a somewhat gloomy tone. Normally, she sends emojis or stickers along with her messages, but this time it was just text. Could this be a sign that she’s planning to end things? Are there any behaviors or changes in mood that you take as signs that a relationship is coming to an end?

Maezawa from the President’s Office here—I’ll answer as well. If something happened in your private life, I don’t think it’s necessarily a sign of an impending breakup. However, depending on how you handle things from here, it could still end up leading to a separation.

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. Since we only meet occasionally—about once a month—I think it’s the kind of relationship where neither of us would mind much whether it continues or ends. I don’t think you need to overthink it. As long as neither of you gets dropped from the other’s list of priorities, I imagine the relationship will continue.

I’m Flag Maker, a relationship columnist. I’ve never been dumped by a woman once a relationship has started, so I can’t really say I know the warning signs. But to me, it’s important to be able to spend time together even when someone’s feeling low or not very energetic. So I don’t take it too badly when the other person is feeling down. I actually dislike it more when she forces herself to act upbeat. That said, this assumes that I’m not the reason she’s feeling that way. In this case, I’m not sure what’s causing it, but I would first: ① Match her lower energy by speaking more calmly and slowing down the pace a little. ② Then gently say something like, “You seem less energetic than usual, and I’m worried I might be the reason. I’m really sorry.” That should help you get at least some idea of why she’s feeling down. I’d think about how to deal with it after figuring out the cause.

I’m in Seattle. That sounds like a sign that things are coming to an end. Once a month is too infrequent to really become close. You may be better off narrowing it down to someone you both feel like seeing about twice a month.
