I was asked to dress casually without anything flashy. How casual should I go in this case?

I’m Fuu, a column writer. I prefer dresses, but for going to a slightly upscale restaurant, use female TV presenters as a style reference. As long as you’re not wearing anything overly revealing for your profile photos, supporters make offers based on your profile, so I think an outfit similar to what you’re wearing in your profile photos would be fine.

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here with an answer as well. Actually, that’s one of the options that appears when you check the relevant box. And when it comes to clothing, there are only these two choices: 1. I’d like you to come dressed somewhat formally. 2. I’d like you to come in casual clothes that aren’t too flashy. So, I assume you’d choose ② when you mean, “Don’t worry too much about what you wear,” and ① when you’re going to a slightly upscale restaurant but don’t need to dress too formally. That said, I’ve never really asked what people had in mind when they checked the box. There’s also a message section for women, so if a man has a specific preference, like wanting you to dress a certain way, I feel he’d probably write something like that himself. In fact, there was once a man who wrote something like, “I’d like you to wear a thong,” and the woman ended up asking, “What exactly does this mean?” >< > How casual should the outfit be in this case? Basically, something you’d wear on a date. I think the ideal would be something that brings out your best features while still being comfortable enough that you don’t get tired.

This is just a template, so assume the men are clicking it without giving it much thought. It means you should wear a proper date outfit—not something like a cabaret club hostess’s attire or an outfit you’d wear to a wedding. As Date◎Yume mentioned, it’s best to avoid those kinds of outfits for the first meeting. Once you know each other’s preferences, anything should be fine. Marika

I’m Kazu, a male member. I often ask for a “casual, understated outfit” too, but one day a woman told me she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to wear, and it made me realize how unclear that can be. Apparently, different men can mean very different things by it. For me, “understated” means nothing too revealing, and “casual” means jeans and sneakers are fine. However, I’ve heard from staff that jeans and sneakers often lead to complaints. So I’d suggest avoiding jeans and sneakers, and going for a polished, understated look—something you might wear to a slightly upscale restaurant.

I’m だて◎ゆめ, a male member. I’m pretty much fine with any kind of outfit. The other day, I wore ripped jeans with a shirt and jacket. I think you’ll be fine wearing whatever you feel like. P.S. 茉莉花さん, The woman I mentioned seeing the other day was someone I’m already dating. I realize your question was about what to wear to a first meeting. Sorry for the off-topic answer(笑)

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. I mean the kind of clothes you normally wear when going out—something you’d wear to work or school, or when meeting friends. Relatively casual. What I’d like you to avoid is dressing up deliberately. I prefer understated clothing because I don’t want it to look like you’re my escort or a professional.
