I’m a male member. What’s the reasoning behind setting transportation expenses for a first date anywhere from ¥5,000 to ¥10,000? Wouldn’t it be clearer—and more reassuring for women—to simply set it at exactly ¥10,000?

Mamimiya from Universe Club here. Even when explaining it myself, I’ve wondered about this too. If the range is ¥5,000–¥10,000, wouldn’t some people be unsure whether to give ¥5,001, ¥8,000, or something else? But perhaps, as an unspoken rule, many men simply give either ¥5,000 or ¥10,000. Women accept it with the expectation that they’ll receive at least ¥5,000, so if they actually receive exactly ¥5,000, I feel they’re likely to wonder whether he wasn’t interested in them or simply thought he was being cheap. Transportation money is like a silent ticket to the next meeting, so I think the amount may be taken as an indication of how he feels.

I’ll answer this as Maezawa from the CEO’s office. Thanks for your question. I can’t say I know the real reason, but I sometimes think it’s because men want to feel important. If the allowance is fixed at ¥10,000, then paying ¥10,000 is nothing special. But when there’s some flexibility, they can brag, “I gave her ¥10,000, you know?” (笑)
