In my case, the gifts have so far been limited to birthday and Christmas presents, and she told me what kind of things she wanted. There’s probably no standard amount, but in terms of cost, they were about the same as the allowance.

Unless he does something that gives you an idea of how much he’s thinking of spending, the best approach is to simply mention something you happen to want right now.
If it’s something worth around twice that amount, ¥70,000–¥80,000, or ¥30,000–¥40,000, that’s still within a cute, reasonable range.
That said, it seems arrangements don’t tend to last very long when you receive an expensive gift…

If you’re seeing him in a monthly arrangement, I imagine you have the kind of relationship where you can ask him about it, so why not ask roughly how much he has budgeted?
Normally, rather than going by a standard allowance, the budget will probably be based to some extent on the man’s income level.
So I think it can vary considerably from one man to another. Some might give a gift worth ¥300,000–¥500,000 because it’s a special birthday, while others might spend around ¥100,000, or just a few tens of thousands of yen. It really depends on how much financial leeway he has.
If you can’t ask him directly about the budget, something like:
“I’m happy just knowing you thought of me, so anything is fine. I’m looking forward to it.”
would probably be a safe response. (Though that can put the man in a tough spot, haha.)
Alternatively, you could just tell him what type of thing you’d like—such as a watch, bag, or clothes—or simply mention a brand you like.
Something along those lines should work too.
