Apparently, back in the Edo period, one in two hidden Christians couldn’t bring themselves to step on the fumie. If refusing meant being killed, they should’ve just stepped on it!
Times have changed, and today, one in every 20 women registered is married, while one in two has a boyfriend.
You can’t identify secretly married women unless you conduct a fumie test—but since I’m sure they’d happily step on a photo of their husband’s face, it wouldn’t be a reliable measure.

Apparently, there are quite a few women who have boyfriends or are married, according to my papa (a male supporter).
If they’re divorced, they’ll probably mention it in their profile.
If someone is still unmarried at 40, it’s probably best to assume there’s some reason or quirk preventing them from getting married.

For the sake of your peace of mind, it’s better to assume they do.
Women also decide whether to keep quiet based on the man they’re dealing with.
When the man is someone like you, who would worry about it, it’s only natural for her to choose not to say anything.
Personally, I don’t get the impression that all that many women have boyfriends or husbands.
After all, most people with ordinary sensibilities would probably feel bad doing that to their partner.
That said, women who are open to an adult relationship (intimate) often have some kind of adult relationship with men outside of papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) as well.
For example, they may have broken up with their boyfriend but still be in a friends-with-benefits situation.
Or they may be looking for someone on a dating app, only to end up being played by men who are just looking for sex.
The most surprising story I heard was from a woman who had been cheated on by her partner three months before their wedding, thought, “Then I’ll cheat too,” and signed up with Universe Club.
It’s interesting to hear their stories and see how resilient women can be.
