Additional question about filing gift tax for papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)

I date multiple people at the same time. Each person gives me about ¥600,000 a year since we meet roughly once a month. For the less frequent arrangements, we meet once every month or two, and I receive about ¥250,000 a year from each person. I have several arrangements like that. So if I were to report everything properly, I would have to combine payments from several people to exceed the ¥1.1 million threshold. None of the men seem to think that I’m also seeing several other people, so I doubt they imagine I’m receiving more than ¥1.1 million in total. I can’t exactly ask someone I only see once every month or two for their full name and address. I’m unsure how I should fill in the names and addresses on my tax return if, like me, the total exceeds ¥1.1 million across multiple people. Is it okay to leave those fields blank when filing? If so, I assume the tax office would question it, but all I could say is that I don’t know.

Ask the tax office staff as you go, write down everything you know accurately, and if there’s something you don’t know and have no way of reporting, just say you don’t know. If they tell you that’s not acceptable, then you can say, “In that case, I can’t file my return.” They’ll still collect what they’re owed, even if you don’t understand everything. (lol) Marika

It’s safest to ask the tax office directly. Unlike decades ago, they’re much more helpful nowadays. If it were me, I’d write down the man’s club name. I think it’s fine to simply provide what you know accurately and leave out anything you don’t know. What matters to them, I assume, is the basis for the tax and whether the amount is accurate. If anything about the amount seems suspicious, they may contact you or conduct an investigation. But if you’re filing honestly—and the amount reported is correct—I don’t think they’ll particularly contact you. (Though I imagine it would be a different story if we were talking about tens of millions of yen.)
