I’m married. Someone from a business partner’s company asked me out for dinner, and I’m not sure how to respond. They gave me their contact information, but they don’t know I’m married. Should I contact them and be honest about it? Would saying, “Let’s just be friends,” be enough to end things? It would be rude not to contact them at all, wouldn’t it? They’re a client, so I don’t want things to become awkward going forward. What should I do?

This is work, not a pickup attempt. Did he tell you, “I like you. Please go out with me”? If it’s work-related, there should be plenty of invitations like, “Let’s go out for a meal,” but perhaps you’re still in your first year as a working adult. Don’t tell your supervisor that you were hit on—just ask for advice. If you’re nervous, ask your supervisor to come with you.

I also saw your follow-up question, and I think he’s clearly inviting you with ulterior motives rather than as a business proposition. Ignoring him is probably best. (If he’s the kind of man who would interfere with the arrangement, the outcome will be the same unless you sleep with him. If you’re not willing to compromise that far, you’ll reach the same conclusion anyway.) But if you feel that would be rude, you could simply share with him what you wrote in your question. He may still say he wants to meet you anyway, but don’t take that at face value. Basically, when a man invites you out, he wants something physical. Some women are good at managing that kind of distance, but the fact that you’re asking this question in the first place shows that you’re probably not suited to it. I think you’d be better off sticking to the straightforward approach. Taro

I think this is something you should discuss with your boss, not ask about in an anonymous Q&A box.

It may not necessarily be hitting on you. Why not invite some other coworkers to dinner as well? If you’re still concerned, you could mention during the conversation that you’re married. You should make it clear that, as far as you’re concerned, it’s simply an extension of work.

To begin with, is it really considered hitting on someone when a business contact invites you out for a meal? It seems to me that they’re only inviting you to dinner or giving you their contact information to help move the business relationship along.
