A 26-year-old woman I recently made an offer to said she’s a college student (?) and needs help paying ¥1 million in tuition (?) by the end of this month. Would you believe her?

Even if it’s true, isn’t it pretty concerning for someone who’s 26 and attending university or graduate school to have no clear idea how they’re going to fund it? The truth might be scarier than a lie. Marika

Whether you believe it or not is beside the point. I’m not in the habit of paying a million yen for nothing.

If you barely know each other, it’s almost certainly a lie.

I can’t be in a relationship with someone who can say something like that. It also means they only see you as someone they can say that to… Sadly, they don’t really care about you; they just see you as someone they can get money from.

Whether it’s true or a lie, I don’t think it really matters. The point is whether you feel she’s worth giving one million yen to. I don’t understand why you need a reason beyond that. That said, I do wonder whether you’re financially comfortable enough to feel that way when you’ve only just made the offer. If you’re likely to end up saying things like, “I was conned—I’m going to sue her,” then I think you shouldn’t give her the money. If you have enough leeway to laugh it off and say, “I gave her one million yen, then she stopped responding. I guess I’m too trusting and get taken advantage of easily,” then I think it’s fine to give it to her—after finding out her address, real name, and so on. Generally, I feel you might become comfortable giving that kind of amount only after the relationship has continued for six months or a year. In *Section Chief Shima Kōsaku*, there’s a scene where Kumiko Omachi lends $100 to a homeless person. The amount is different, of course, but I think you need to have that same kind of mindset when you give someone money.

Even if I were to believe her, I can’t help thinking, “She only made the offer the other day, though?” (>_<) If she really intends to pay her tuition, she should have a payment slip or statement. Maybe you could ask her to show you something like that?

There’s not enough information in the question alone to say.

Whether you believe it or not probably depends on the relationship between you and the other person… If you feel you’d be okay being deceived by this person, then I think you should pay them. I personally think it’s a lie… but only they know whether it’s true. If you do pay, I’d love to hear how things turn out.
