What are the most common reasons college students get into papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? When I tell different papas (male supporters) that I need money for beauty treatments or hair removal, they say things like, “Huh? A college student spends that much money? My daughter didn’t start doing things like that until she began working...” What kind of reason would make them sympathize with me?

Recently, there was someone who was about to say they had no money left, wasn’t there? Are you misunderstanding what papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) actually means? Thinking you can get money just by making someone feel sorry for you… that’s only going to turn them off.

If you give a made-up-sounding reason, they’ll probably question whether it’s really true. If beauty treatments or hair removal are genuinely the reason, why not show them the actual costs involved? Trying to gain sympathy probably won’t get you very far—people can’t give what they don’t have. And as for the “my daughter earns a salary” comment, just take it with a grain of salt.

Beauty treatments aside, I feel like it’s probably best to avoid hair removal. A lot of people will say things like, “Don’t talk about body hair, idiot lol.” That said, I do like that atmosphere where you’re laughing together, but there’s still a subtle tension in the air. Taro

I don’t think an allowance is something given out of pity. So I don’t see a problem with wanting to buy designer goods or enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. It’s a matter of personal values, so there’s no need to worry about what people say when they rudely impose their own values on others.

Early on, I deliberately keep it vague with a slightly troubled expression, saying, “Well, there’s been a lot going on…” Rather than telling weird lies or being completely honest, I think this is an effective approach.

I think beauty treatments and hair removal are things men simply don’t understand—much like how we can’t understand men collecting figurines or fighter-plane model kits. So you probably shouldn’t make that your main reason. Even if you explain why you feel you need the money, it may leave a bad impression rather than make him feel sympathetic. And just because someone feels sorry for you doesn’t mean they’ll give you money. In my experience, an allowance tends to increase naturally as you grow closer—because he wants to support you, make your life more comfortable, or simply doesn’t want to let go of someone he finds especially appealing, even if it costs him.
