With a papa who gives presents, we usually discuss it beforehand and then go shopping together. For example:
“Since it’s your birthday, is there anything I should buy you?”
“I’d like a small pair of earrings I can wear to work.”
Or:
“Shall we go buy you some winter clothes?”
“I’ve been wanting a coat, so would a coat be okay?”
He can probably get a general idea of the price range from my age and the way I dress. So I think having even a brief conversation beforehand helps avoid either of us feeling that things didn’t turn out as expected.

Since I don’t suggest going shopping without a specific purpose, I’ve never been asked about my budget. When I go shopping with a woman, it’s because I’ve decided I want to give her something, like clothes or lingerie, and I’m mainly there to check her size.
When I give a gift, I usually already have something in mind, so I generally know roughly how much it will cost.
