Maezawa here with an answer.
You mean the number of visits?
Come to think of it, there was a time when it was all the rage to put a counter on your website.
I think most websites had one back then. The adoption rate must have been around 90%, don’t you think?
At first, there were lots of sites giving away CGI counters, so we’d diligently install them. (Perl was the mainstream language back then.)
Of course, there were also websites that couldn’t use CGI, and I remember thinking companies with sites that couldn’t use CGI were kind of questionable.
Later, even those sites started offering basic features like counters and form submissions, and there was a time when almost every website had a counter.
After all, you wanted to know how many people were visiting your site.
And then there were “milestone numbers.”
A milestone number meant a nice round number like 1,000 or 10,000, and people would say, “Whoever gets this number, please contact me.” It was a pretty wholesome era. (笑)
Huh? Google?
Did Google even exist back then?
Even if it did, I feel like it wasn’t very well known yet.
Anyway—
A little while ago, I asked the person who created this Q&A box, “Doesn’t this site have a visitor counter?”
“What?”
“A counter?”
“What are you talking about?”
“What era are you from?”
“You mean milestone numbers and all that?”
“There’s no way we’d add something like that nowadays.”
That’s how coldly I was dismissed.
So, I have no idea how many visits this site gets. ><
Even if I did know, it probably wouldn’t be very useful to either the questioners or the answerers.
Do we really need visitor numbers nowadays?
Perhaps the time will come when we do again.
P.S. Maybe someone working behind the scenes will write about it someday… maybe… perhaps.
