Would it be a negative if I told someone I’m planning to date that I used to do papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? I was registered as an A-type member to save money for my dreams. What impression do young men have of papa-katsu?

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here—I’ll answer too. I think it depends on the person. If he’s the kind of man who wants to know what sort of men you’ve dated in the past, I don’t think there’s any problem with telling him. But some men don’t want to hear about your relationships with other men. In that case, I think it’s better not to bring it up.

I’m a 60-something man trying to figure things out. The woman I’m seeing is also Type A. I heard that when she started dating her boyfriend, she didn’t like keeping it from him, so she told him about it pretty early on. At the time, she was 19 and her boyfriend was 21; they were both university students. Apparently, his reaction was, “I don’t really understand what this is about, but I guess it’s fine…” She’s 21 now, and her boyfriend has started working, but they’re still together as before. She’s even joked—at least half-jokingly—that she might introduce me to him… I suppose it really depends on the person. (汗) Still, when I heard this, I nearly dropped my chopsticks during dinner… lol

This is Ayase Nana ♡ You absolutely must not say that. I don’t think there’s any way they’d understand. My child’s friend said she wanted to date a boy who had approached her on Instagram, but hasn’t she been reading too much manga? Put yourself in the opposite position—what would you do? If rumors started spreading that you were doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), your life would be over.

I’m Dai, a male member. It can only hurt you. By saying she’s an A-type, I think she means to emphasize that she isn’t selling her body. But if anything, you should understand that men may view her even more negatively than they would a sex worker. Her reasons—whether it’s for a dream or anything else—don’t matter. If she wants to seriously date a man, it’s wisest to take that secret to the grave.

Conversely, how would you feel if a man who had just asked you to start dating him told you that you were merely a friends-with-benefits partner, his second choice, or something along those lines? Even if you’re an “A type,” that kind of thing simply won’t fly. It would only seem like he’s trying to free himself from the pain of keeping it to himself. If you put yourself in the other person’s shoes—having this heavy burden dumped on you without warning—you’d understand, wouldn’t you? Akari

I’m Aya, a female member. I don’t think honesty is the only form of kindness, so I’m not going to say. I don’t think men can handle that much. It’s a secret I’ll take to my grave.

I’m Paper Airplane, a male club member. Honestly, even if it was a male club member, people would get a bad impression if they heard he’d done papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)… so if he’s an A-type, even more so. If it were someone you were dating, they’d probably be shocked regardless of the type that you’d accepted money.

Wouldn’t it just turn him off? There aren’t many other jobs where men can make that kind of money so easily, so he might even feel a bit jealous or resentful. And even if you really were an “A-type,” he’d probably still wonder whether that was actually true, which would only make him suspicious. He might also think that your sense of money is different from his. Other than the fact that you’d feel relieved for being honest because you can’t keep it to yourself, there’s really no benefit. That’s just an older woman’s speculation, though—not a young man’s perspective—so I could be completely wrong. Marika
