All my papas (male supporters) play golf, come to think of it.
I’ve only gone with one of them. Another promised to take me to a nice course once I get better. And there’s someone else who keeps saying, “Let’s go in the fall when it cools down.”
Well, I’m the one asking them to take me, though（笑).
First of all, why do men like golf? I think it’s an appealing sport that really speaks to the male psyche. It looks easy at first glance, but it’s surprisingly challenging for beginners, intermediate players, and even experts.
Another thing men like is being able to get really into the gear—just like cycling or fishing. Also, when four men get together, they often make side bets, just like in mahjong. That adds another game-like element.
As for business, you’re on a wide stretch of grass, far enough from the group next to you that they can’t hear even if you shout. It’s an open space, yet it feels like a private room with no one else around.
There may be a caddie, but they know how to keep their distance. It’s perfect for confidential conversations. Some people become closer as individuals and find their business goes more smoothly, while in other cases, the conversation may develop into something deeper.
And then, of course, there’s talk about women, along with things like how “that area” isn’t as lively as it used to be, age-related topics, health, and so on.
If you’re beautiful, have a great figure, and play golf well, you’ll be popular (probably).

I think there are plenty of people who enjoy golf, not just papas.
In fact, I get the impression that papas may actually be less into golf than the general population.
Maybe it’s because they’d rather spend time with women than go golfing, though.

I’ve even heard of cases where a subordinate took all the clients and moved to another company. It was unfortunate, but the boss had left everything to the subordinate, wasn’t doing any work, and went golfing day after day far too often.

I think business relationships often go more smoothly when people share a common hobby.
So, among people in their 40s and older, golf may simply be the most common shared interest.
With baseball or tennis, you have to run around, but with golf, you don’t necessarily have to run. You can even get around by cart. And although it’s somewhat artificial, being outdoors in nature may be part of the appeal.

I’m a golf fan too, so I guess that’s how I’m seen as well, haha.
Maybe it’s because golf is played outdoors, which makes you feel more relaxed and puts you in a good mood.

I think I like golf simply because I enjoy it. You probably don’t really have a specific reason for liking the things you enjoy either.
I enjoy going with someone because there’s plenty of time to talk, you’re never left with nothing to do, and you only need to concentrate for brief moments. It also costs less than going to bars, doesn’t involve any ulterior motives related to women, feels relatively healthy, and is socially acceptable since you’re less likely to be in a crowded space during the COVID era.
