My papa (a male supporter) invited me on a day trip around Kyushu for our third date, involving a four-hour journey each way. We’d meet at the station at 7:30 a.m. and finish at 10 p.m. The allowance would be 45, paid afterward. Honestly, being tied up for 14 hours for 45 felt too mentally exhausting, so I turned him down. But I feel guilty because he invited me. Ladies, would you accept an invitation like this? Am I being selfish?

Thank you for your question! Kida, our representative, will answer. Is that papa an idiot? Even if my boyfriend invited me on a sightseeing trip around Kyushu like that, I’d hate it. Let’s say you went because you felt bad about turning him down. Would you really be able to continue seeing him afterward as if nothing had happened? After being completely exhausted and receiving ¥45,000, could you still respect him? This isn’t about whether ¥45,000 is too little. Would ¥150,000 have made it okay? There’s no point in seeing someone just because it’s a well-paying side job. A genuine relationship means both people respect each other and understand their place. If you want to respect someone, you should also care about their feelings. That said, one good thing about this papa is that he told you about the travel terms in advance. For better or worse, he’s very particular! (笑) I hope you two continue getting along for many years to come.

Maezawa from the President’s Office here. > I turned him down, but... Turning him down was the right choice. A date that long on your third date would be too much. Once you’ve gotten closer and reached the point where spending that much time together wouldn’t feel exhausting, a long date could be fine—but not at this stage. I also have to wonder what that man was thinking. On your third date, you still don’t know each other very well. If he really wanted such a long date anyway, it seems only natural that he should increase the allowance. You could even calculate it by the hour. At ¥10,000 an hour, 14 hours would come to ¥140,000. That’s because you two aren’t close yet. From the man’s perspective, if he doesn’t want to pay that much, then he should go on more dates and build a closer relationship first. > I feel guilty because he invited me and I turned him down. You don’t need to feel guilty. But if you approach men with that kind of consideration, he probably felt that he had met a genuinely good woman. > Am I being selfish? Not at all. I think your reaction is perfectly normal. I don’t think you need to worry about it.

Even from Tokyo, you can reach one of Kyushu’s wonderful tourist destinations in under four hours one way. Your papa’s plan is far too reckless. I think you were right to turn it down this time. Marika

I’m Hikōki, a male member. The right thing to do is decline. I think it would be best to end things. Even if you wanted to leave halfway through, they made a proposal that would take four hours from there—on the third date, no less—and couldn’t even sense that you weren’t interested… By the way, Kyushu never came up as a topic at all… So why bring it up out of nowhere, with no setup whatsoever?

I’m Meg, one of the female members. It’s okay—you’re not being selfish. I certainly wouldn’t accept spending that many hours together on only the third date. But are you seeing a papa (a male supporter) who makes you think of it as being tied up for that long? That’s what concerns me more… Take care not to push yourself.

I’m Nana Ayase♡ If it’s a fun trip, getting up early and coming home late can be enjoyable. But if it feels like you’ll be tied up the whole time, you might end up forgetting to smile along the way. Since that wouldn’t be fair to your papa (a male supporter) either, I think you made the right decision by turning it down. He might still have accepted if it had been somewhere with a shorter travel time, but a long journey can be a little tough, right?

I’m BB7, a male member. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with turning it down. Even if you were offered a generous allowance, if you would only feel that traveling with him was a “burden,” it would be better for both of you not to go on a trip together.
