When men do papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), how do they see it if you leave money out of the equation? Is it like having a young friends-with-benefits partner, or a young girlfriend? I imagine it differs depending on whether they have a wife, but I’d like to know whether they approach it more like a casual FWB situation or like dating a girlfriend. Thanks in advance.

I’m Maezawa from the CEO’s office, and I’ll answer this one too. What exactly do you mean by the “friends-with-benefits” dynamic, and what exactly do you mean by a “girlfriend” dynamic? I’d like you to define those terms more specifically when asking the question. As it stands, I’m not sure about things like: - If you have sex every time, does that make her a friend with benefits or a girlfriend? - If she’s considered a girlfriend, does that mean you shouldn’t have sex? - What kind of situation would make her your girlfriend? Those points seem rather unclear.

I’m a BB7 male member. To me, it’s about having someone to spend a little time with during an otherwise boring life—a companion for enjoying ourselves. By “companion,” I don’t mean treating her carelessly or casually. I want to cherish her like a girlfriend, but without falling seriously in love, and keep things as mutually understood and uncomplicated as friends with benefits. I think it’s enough for both of us to have fun. Since I see it as a relationship that exists only in that moment, I don’t expect anything in return. It’s a fleeting relationship that won’t last forever—like a mayfly.

I’m Basil, a male member. It depends on the person, but for the most part, I see it as a friends-with-benefits arrangement. When I first started, I imagined it more like having a young girlfriend, and I wanted to enjoy spending time together outside of sex as well. However, the first woman clearly told me she wasn’t looking for that, and since similar patterns continued afterward, I changed my perspective and figured women were prioritizing value for money too. If we happen to share a hobby, some will say things like, “You should take me to that event you recommended next time,” and I really value women like that.

I’m Kazu, a male member. What difference does the questioner have in mind between a girlfriend vibe and a friends-with-benefits vibe?

I’m Flag Maker, a column writer. This is one of my shortcomings, but no matter how far things go, I always end up keeping it on a “just friends” level. I can’t really do the lovey-dovey, touchy-feely stuff, and I’m too embarrassed to act like someone’s girlfriend. So to me, it feels like having sex with a friend. As an aside, in Kansai, people also call a fuck buddy a “kakitare.” You might say something like, “I went and hooked up with my kakitare yesterday,” but these days, “fuck buddy” has pretty much replaced it, and you hardly ever hear “kakitare” anymore.
