This may be a simple question, but men (women are welcome to answer too): how do you judge whether someone’s makeup is heavy or light?
I don’t wear colored contacts, curl my eyelashes with an eyelash curler, or wear false eyelashes, and I don’t even apply foundation. I also leave my eyebrows natural, so I don’t fill them in. On top of that, I have naturally monolid eyes with no cosmetic surgery, yet a man recently told me, “Papuwa, you wear a lot of makeup,” and I was really hurt… (；∀；)
To me, being perceived as wearing heavy makeup means being seen as looking very different without makeup.
Maybe it was because the lipstick I usually wear is a deep red, which made my overall makeup look heavier than it actually is.
There’s also makeup that looks incredibly natural but is actually very carefully done. So what do you use to judge?
I feel like I put a lot of effort into my makeup, but people still tell me it looks too light.
For reference, I have a darker complexion.
My natural lip color is fairly deep, so even before COVID I didn’t really wear lipstick—just a bit of gloss. Lately, since I rarely take my mask off, I’ve only been using Mentholatum lip balm…
I once went to a department store makeup counter and asked them, “Could you do my makeup like a Ginza hostess?” As expected, they made it much heavier. One of my coworkers said I looked like I could be a flight attendant for Asiana Airlines.
Personally, I like my usual makeup better because it feels more like me, so I normally stick with that.
The differences were pretty noticeable: a more heavily made-up complexion, stronger eyeliner, and darker lipstick in a vivid pink—quite different from my usual look.

If the lipstick is a deep shade, I think people naturally assume the makeup is heavy.
Also, if the foundation doesn’t suit you—or is applied so thickly that you can’t see any natural glow in your skin—it can give the impression of heavy makeup.
And then there’s the now-popular trend (or maybe it was popular a few years ago?) of making your cheeks pink. That used to be seen as a country-bumpkin look, but I sometimes wonder if it’s just considered normal now.
Dark eyeshadow can also make your makeup look heavy. Even if you’re told that you’re practically makeup-free because you’re only wearing eyeshadow, it can still give that impression.

I think it has to do with how intense the colors are.
If the colors are close to the natural colors people already have, even carefully applied makeup can look natural.
But when the colors are too strong, people may think, “You didn’t need to go that far,” and get the impression that the makeup is heavy.

As Papuwa-san said, in most cases, I think it’s simply the contrast in color. At most, it might be the powdery look of foundation or how shiny the skin is.
