You might casually think, “Is that papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)?” But there’s no way to know whether it actually is.
I think many people assume that when they see a man and woman with a significant age gap. In reality, they could genuinely be parent and child, relatives, or even a real couple with a large age difference—in other words, dating without money involved.
Incidentally, if a man has a conspicuous appearance, people will probably stare even when he’s walking with a woman his own age, or even with another man.
In other words, some men attract attention regardless of whether it’s papa-katsu or not.

You know exactly what I mean, right? You’ll definitely see couples like that on the other side of an L-shaped sushi-counter bar. They might be out on a cabaret club companion date, though.
So whenever I go on a date with a woman around college age, I’m extremely careful about what I wear so I don’t look like I’m doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan). Even wearing a suit can look suspicious.
If I’m going on a date straight after work, I’ll actually change clothes in my car first. It may all be a pointless effort, but still.

It’s less that you can tell for sure and more that, once you look at them that way, it starts to seem apparent. Conversely, if you’re told they’re a boss and employee, that’s how they look; if you’re told they’re a salesperson and customer, that’s how they look too. And if you don’t pay attention, you won’t notice at all. In other words, people aren’t watching us as closely as we think they are.
