The last couple of times, she’s spent almost the entire time on LINE after we went to a hotel. Since it’s late at night, I can’t imagine there’s anything that urgent. Sometimes she even brings her phone into bed. Is it okay if I just end things without saying anything?

I’m in Seattle. I really enjoy being on my phone too. Instead of parting ways without saying anything, why not explain the reason and negotiate on what we can compromise on?

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. It really bothers me when someone is constantly on their phone during the first or second meeting, when you’d expect them to be the most considerate. It doesn’t bode well for the future… Even once you’re comfortable with each other, it would be strange not to check your phone at all—but constantly being on it is a no-go, right? (Wait… I guess I’m being picky too.)

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here. Thank you for your question. It is unpleasant when someone is constantly on their phone while you’re together, isn’t it? That said, not long ago there was also a question along the lines of, “What’s wrong with being perfect?” Apparently, people who never touch their phones at all can be seen as strange too, so it’s a difficult time to navigate. Men are basically old-fashioned at heart(笑), so I feel that not using your phone is simply good manners. That said, I imagine you feel she is being rude, but common sense can differ between generations. > Since it’s late at night, I don’t think there could be many urgent matters. Perhaps this is where your perspectives differ. Regardless of whether it’s late at night, some people may feel that if they don’t respond to messages immediately, their friendships will suffer. That may simply be the culture they’re used to. So although older generations may not consider it urgent, women of her generation may see it that way. Still, communication should be possible, so you could try saying something like: “I’d prefer it if you didn’t use your phone while we’re together. Would that be possible?” If she still can’t do that, continuing to see her while putting up with it will probably only cause you stress, so I think it would be understandable to end things. Alternatively, you could accept that this is simply a generational difference and continue seeing her without worrying about it when she uses her phone.

I’m Tetsu, a male member. Sounds like she was only after your money. Don’t let it get you down. You don’t need to ask anyone else—the moment you feel “I can’t do this,” that’s the time to end things.

I’m Kazu, a male member. If I like the woman I’m seeing, I don’t mind things like that because I see them as her being comfortable and natural around me. If anything, I’m glad we’ve become close enough for her to act that way. If her using her phone bothers me, that probably means we’re simply not a good fit. A dating club is a place to build relationships. When it comes to chemistry, you don’t need some complete stranger’s opinion. If you don’t like this woman, I don’t think there’s any reason to keep seeing her when you have to force yourself.
