Even if you show someone affection, it means nothing if it doesn’t reach them, right? I’d really like to ask all of you who talk about love: When do you feel that the other person is truly receiving your love? I often find myself wondering whether they’re only putting on a smile and are actually dissatisfied…

I’ll answer as Maezawa from the president’s office. Thank you for your question. “If you show someone affection but it doesn’t get through to them, then it’s meaningless, isn’t it?” That’s the wrong starting point. If you’re thinking about whether or not your feelings will get through to the other person, then it’s not really affection—it’s more like flattery. There’s a phrase: “unconditional love.” I probably won’t understand it myself for another 300 years or so, but I believe true love is unconditional love. So you still have a lot more growing to do.

I’m in Seattle. I don’t usually initiate kisses, but after things had been going well for over a year, it made me happy when he started saying, “Give me a kiss.”

I’m Kazu, a male member. Even if your feelings get through to someone, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll accept them, does it? Also, I don’t think the questioner’s attitude of “talking about love” is appropriate. Someone with that kind of attitude would probably have a hard time both conveying their feelings to the other person and having those feelings accepted. The moment I feel that my feelings for my partner have truly reached her and been accepted is when she voluntarily offers me something.

I’m Taro, a male member. Let me talk about this thing called love (I really liked that subtle jab). At a dating club, the structure is basically that women can get paid by putting up with things and going along with them. And since there are all kinds of people, it’s complicated. As you said, she might be forcing a smile, or something that seems incredibly special to you might just be something she casually does with other male members too. Once you start doubting things, there’s no end to it. In fact, I keep going around in those endless circles of self-questioning. Every now and then, though, something happens that makes me think, “Surely this one really got through to her,” and that makes me happy. Sometimes, years after we’ve gone our separate ways, we end up getting back in touch. When a woman says, “Thank you for everything back then,” and specifically mentions things unrelated to money, I feel that we really did understand each other. At the same time, I regret not trusting her more directly and acting on that trust. So I’m trying to apply what I’ve learned to the relationships I’m involved in now. In that sense, I think I am making progress, little by little. Sorry for being so slow on the uptake. If you ask me again in about 300 years, I think I’ll be able to give you a slightly more solid answer.

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. There are people who need you. And there’s someone out there who’s right for you. Someone who’s needed by both you and the other person. You can’t be right for everyone, so what matters is finding someone who can genuinely face each other and make it work. You only need to be popular with that one person. As long as your feelings get through to them, that’s enough. And then… To trust your partner, someone else, or the people around you, you first have to believe in yourself…

I’m Tetsu, a male member. Hmm… so you’re saying it’s meaningless? In that case, I guess I’ve been doing something meaningless all along. (laughs) I believe I’m happier loving someone than being loved by someone. How can you even know whether another person loves you? I feel that spending time thinking about questions with no answers is a waste. But loving someone else simply means being honest with your own feelings, so there’s nothing to agonize over.
