I want to erase the fact that I did papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan). I wanted to be genuinely loved by my real mom and dad, receive money from my own parents, and live with gratitude toward them. But that wasn’t possible. Is there any way to ease this unbearable pain that I can’t do anything about?

I’m Tetsu, a male member. You can’t erase the facts, but perhaps you can erase the memory of an unpleasant experience. A commonly suggested approach is to overwrite old memories with new ones. Tell yourself that it wasn’t papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)—you simply had a meal with a man who approached you. Human memory is quite vague, so apparently, if you keep telling yourself that, your memory may eventually rewrite it as though that were the truth.

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here—I’ll answer as well. Thank you for your question. I’m curious why you want to erase what happened from your life. If you had a bad experience, perhaps you could continue a little longer. You might meet a better man and make some good memories. If you’re worried about being found out through your work, even if you think about it now, you’ll be found out if you’re going to be found out. And basically, you shouldn’t be found out anyway. So I think worrying about it would be pointless, since there’s nothing you can do about it. In that case, I think it’s best not to think about it at all.

I’m Flag Maker, a column writer. It’s hard to say for sure since men and women may see things differently, but while childhood trauma can be difficult to overcome, I feel that, with enough time, we can gradually heal from things that happen to us as adults. You found yourself in an impossible situation and had no choice but to do papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan). You managed to survive because of it. I don’t think that makes it a bad thing. At the time, it was probably a choice you had to make in order to get by. Guilt is something we feel ourselves. You received an allowance and did papa-katsu—the person blaming you more than anyone for that fact is probably you. In a way, it also shows that you’re a serious and conscientious person. In other words, neither the fact that you did papa-katsu nor the fact that you regret it now makes you a bad person. Please don’t blame yourself more than necessary, and when things feel painful, give both your mind and body plenty of time to rest.

I’m Kazu, a male member. You can’t erase the facts. Most people live carrying some kind of regret, remorse, or secret. Pain gradually fades with time. Since there’s no way to turn back the clock, it’s more productive to think about how to carry your mistakes and move forward in the best way you can. I don’t think papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) has anything to do with the love you receive from your parents.

I’m in Seattle. Let’s do more papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) and earn more. Once your life becomes financially stable, the world feels more enjoyable. Try to save as much as possible instead of spending it all. Once you’re happy, you’ll surely forget the unpleasant memories.
