What would you do if you found out your own daughter was doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? Would it be better to pretend you don’t know? (Since that would mean admitting that I know about papa-katsu too.)

I’m Tetsu, a male member. I do find myself thinking about it, since I have a daughter too. I don’t think I’d scold her. I dislike the idea that something is okay for me but not for other people. I’d want to ask why she decided to get involved in papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan). After that, I think I’d let her make her own choices. Is papa-katsu really a bad thing? Many people are happier through papa-katsu than they were before getting involved in it.

I’m Maezawa from the President’s Office, and I’ll answer this too. Thanks for your question. Ah, this is kind of like asking whether you can talk to your daughter about condoms, isn’t it? Once she’s old enough to become sexually active, people in the West make sure she receives proper sex education, whereas Japan doesn’t really do that—is that what you mean? Talking about something you’ve found out would mean revealing what you yourself are doing, so I don’t think there’s any need to bring that up. However, I do think it’s worth talking about what she should do to protect herself. That said, I feel this applies regardless of whether she’s involved in papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan).

I’m Taro, a male member. Am I right in assuming you’re asking because you’ve discovered that your own daughter is involved in papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? If she’s an adult and capable of making her own decisions, I’d leave it alone. But if you truly can’t let it go, confronting it head-on is another option. If you do, don’t try any strange tricks or half-measures. That will only lead to the worst possible outcome. You’d have to be prepared to give up an ordinary life and an ordinary family, steel yourself, and go straight at it—are you ready to see it through? I think that’s what opening Pandora’s box really means. By the way, have you ever read the myth of Pandora’s box? There are several versions, but I like the one that comes up if you search for “Pandora’s Box Fukumusume Fairy Tale Collection.” Give it a read if you’re interested.

I’m in Seattle. My daughter has always been socially awkward, so if she’s doing well and growing into a fine young woman, it honestly makes me emotional. I’ll pretend I don’t know and give her some spending money.

I’m Kazu, a male member. This is just hypothetical, but if my daughter were an adult, I think I’d quietly watch over her.

I’m Flag Maker, a column writer. Either quietly watch over her, thinking, “My daughter’s really doing her best. Good for her.” Or quietly increase her allowance. I think those are probably the only two options.
