I’m on the pill, so my partners ejaculate inside me. It suddenly crossed my mind: if I weren’t taking the pill, could sperm from a man in his 50s or older still get me pregnant? Thank you.

I’m Tetsu, a male member. Age isn’t the deciding factor. Some men in their 70s have successfully fathered children, while some men in their 20s are unable to.

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here. Thank you for your question. You’re very well-informed. Many people probably learned that sperm is also affected by aging after Junichi Ishida—a former playboy who was once shunned after saying that “adultery is a culture”—had a child through fertility treatment. According to the WHO, natural conception generally requires at least 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen, with at least 40% being motile. Considering the fact that 50-something Junichi Ishida underwent five rounds of IVF and two rounds of ICSI to have a child, natural conception was probably difficult for him. I imagine the same is true for other men once they reach their 50s. With that in mind, there are probably very few men over 50 who still have the ability to get someone pregnant. That said, “few” doesn’t mean zero. It’s possible that your partner’s sperm happens to meet the standards of at least 15 million per milliliter and 40% motility. If so, the chances of pregnancy would be higher. Why not have him get a sperm analysis? If his results are below the standard, pregnancy would be highly unlikely—though not impossible.

I’m Taro, a male member. “ I have him finish inside me” made me laugh too. You can find it with a quick Google search, but apparently as many as 3,000 babies are born every year to fathers in their 50s.

I’m Marika. For women, getting pregnant in their 50s is generally quite difficult, but men in their 50s are still very much in their prime. I even know someone who got married in his 50s and went on to have three children in a row. When I was in my 20s, I used to think, “Wait, people in their 50s still have sex?” But men are men, no matter how old they are.

I’m Kazu, a male member. There are even cases of men in their sixties or seventies fathering children naturally, so I think pregnancy is still quite possible even when a man is that age. “I have him finish inside me” is a good way to put it.

I’m Flagmaker, a column writer. Depending on the man’s sperm quality, I think pregnancy is certainly possible.
