It really varies from person to person. Some always compliment me, some always ask me to wear a thong, some say they like me best “bare,” and others want me to wear something that suits their personal taste.
The most confusing request I’ve had was from someone who said sporty bras and briefs, like Calvin Klein or BVD, were the most alluring. I can’t exactly wear those under my regular clothes.
Lingerie is mostly for my own satisfaction. But if wearing it puts me in a better mood, I still want to wear it even if I don’t get complimented. When I’m on a date, I try to match my partner’s preferences as much as possible.
Choosing what to wear for a first date can be difficult, but I think it’s perfectly fine to ask, “What kind do you like?”

Some men may simply be holding back because they’re worried you’ll find it creepy if they comment on your underwear.
Why not try asking him once, “I wore my favorite lingerie today—what do you think?”
Then you can decide what to do going forward based on his reaction.
By the way, I like materials with a subtle sheer quality. Not anything completely see-through or overtly sheer—just a gentle translucence. Think frosted glass.
