This is Joe, the column writer.
Fewer rules are better, if you ask me.
More importantly, Mac, when you said A-san was making a comeback, did you sense something? Mac is amazingly perceptive about this kind of thing.
Oh, pardon me for using this as a message board.

I realized from the series of questions and answers that the issue isn’t so much whether things should be standardized, but that:
“Even though it’s been decided that women should be notified five minutes beforehand, the way men perceive that same five-minute call—and sometimes even how they feel about the woman—can vary.”
Even when we’re following the club’s instructions, it can have either a positive or negative effect depending on the man, and I think that’s the real problem.
Perhaps the club could say when contacting members for the final confirmation of an offer:
“You will generally receive a call about five minutes beforehand.”

Indeed, most women contact me by five minutes before the scheduled time at the latest.
Once, my train suddenly stopped just before reaching the station, and I ended up being late. I contacted the staff by email, and they handled it promptly, so everything worked out. Ever since then, I’ve made sure to arrive at least ten minutes early.
That’s why a message five minutes beforehand feels just right to me. On the other hand, when someone occasionally contacts me a little after the agreed time, I’ve already been waiting nearly fifteen minutes, so my first impression of her is negative from the start.

I believe the announcement to women is standardized as “five minutes beforehand.”

Arriving 10 minutes early is unusual. The early ones arrive just under five minutes ahead of time, while the later ones arrive exactly on time. Anything later than that is late.
It’s only a six- or seven-minute difference at most, so I wouldn’t really call the arrival times all over the place.

It might be difficult to standardize...
Anyway,
I don’t mind either way, no matter how many minutes in advance it is...
