Do Universe staff ever flatter you during the interview?

Mamiya from Universe Tokyo Unit here. Of course I give compliments—that’s only natural! I even try to gauge people’s personalities based on how they respond to compliments. That said, I’m basically incapable of lying, and I may sometimes say things that come across as insulting. I once showered a domineering woman with compliments, and by the end, she even complimented me back. You shouldn’t believe nice words.

Maezawa from the Business Planning Office here as well. I hardly ever give compliments just to flatter people, though I think the other staff members probably do. I suppose that’s what most people generally do. You might wonder how I conduct interviews without saying flattering things, but I simply ask fairly niche questions. Once, Kida, our company president, who had been listening nearby, said to me: “Why are you asking about how many years she’s played piano or practiced flower arrangement? Why ask about things that don’t matter? Men don’t want to hear that. What they want to know is whether she’s willing to go through with it, right? Ask whether she’s ever done it outdoors, in a car, or in a hospital—things like that.” But if someone had done track and field, I might think, “So that’s why she has such great muscles. Impressive.” Or if she’d practiced flower arrangement for over ten years, I might think, “That’s amazing. So that’s why she always has such good posture.” And if someone said they had incredible abs, I might ask them to show me briefly—and they really would be incredible. Since I conducted interviews with those kinds of niche questions, I didn’t really need to flatter anyone. (笑)
